Approximately 40,000 posters to 18,000 films are held by the poster archive. The collections spans the period of the silent and early sound films right up to the most recent productions. German cinema is emphasised in the collection, which, however, also includes posters of many foreign productions exhibited in Germany.
The collection boasts posters by renowned graphic artists such as Josef Fenneker, Jan Lenica, Boris Streimann, Heinz Schulz-Neudamm, Hans Otto Wendt, Klaus Dill, Heinz Bonné, Hans Braun, Ernst Litter, Hans Hillmann and the designer couple Fritz Fischer and Dorothea Fischer-Nosbisch.
In addition, the archive preserves original sketches by the artists Georg Schubert, Erich Meerwald and Bruno Rehak.
The archival work is not limited to obtaining and preserving the originals; they are intended to be available to the public. Posters may be loaned out or reproduced for academic use, publications or exhibitions. Private users, too, may order reproductions of posters.
